Relocating to Dubai as a medical professional
For UK and US dentists, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dental hygienists and therapists, and vets. What the move involves, in order, from a dentist who did it.
A UK-qualified clinician can typically be licensed and working in Dubai within 8 to 16 weeks of starting on the DHA Sheryan portal, assuming documents are attested before you fly. The move has four parts: licence, job, visa, home. This page puts them in order. Last reviewed 22 October 2026; the DHA, ICP and DLD are the authorities.
What does relocating to Dubai actually involve?
- Licence. UK-qualified dentists and doctors apply through the DHA Sheryan portal: primary source verification (DataFlow), the DHA assessment or Prometric exam where required, then a facility sponsor. Timelines of 8 to 16 weeks are typical; the DHA is the authority. For pharmacists it may be MOHAP, for vets it is MOCCAE; the profession pages below say which.
- Job. Most clinicians secure an offer while licensing is in progress; the facility then activates the licence under its name. A fixed basic with an achievable commission trigger is safer than a commission-only start.
- Visa. An employment visa from your facility (typically two to three years, renewable) or, if you buy property at AED 2 million or more, the ten-year Golden Visa. Many colleagues start on the first and move to the second.
- Home. Rent first, buy second is the usual order. A tenancy needs Ejari registration before DEWA (utilities) will connect; buying needs a RERA-registered broker, a Form F, and the DLD.
How does DHA licensing work, step by step?
The route for dentists and doctors. Nurses follow the same steps; pharmacists and vets differ, see their pages.

Attest your documents in the UK
Degree, specialist certificates, marriage and birth certificates: legalised by the FCDO, then attested at the UAE Embassy in London, then translated into Arabic and notarised in the UAE. Do this before you fly; it is the step people regret skipping.
Create a DHA Sheryan account
Register as a healthcare professional on Sheryan, choose your title, upload passport, degree, transcripts, experience letters, a GDC or GMC certificate of good standing (under six months old), BLS certificate and a photo, and pay the application fee.
Primary source verification via DataFlow
DataFlow writes to your university and your regulator to confirm every document. Two to four weeks is typical when everyone replies promptly; longer when a certificate needs re-issuing.
DHA assessment or Prometric exam, where required
A computer-based multiple-choice exam at a Prometric centre in Dubai or abroad. Specialists on a UK specialist register are often exempt; the DHA's current criteria decide.
Eligibility letter
The DHA issues an eligibility letter, valid for a year, which lets you accept an offer from a licensed facility.
Facility sponsorship and licence activation
Your employer uploads the contract and malpractice cover on Sheryan and pays the licensing fee; the DHA activates your licence under that facility. Changing employer later is a transfer, not a new application.
Visa medical, Emirates ID, visa stamp
The employment visa follows: medical fitness test, biometrics, Emirates ID. You can now practise.

DentistsDoctors
GMC to DHA, specialist exemptions, hospital groups, the specialised-talent visa route.
DoctorsDental hygienists and therapists
Scope, licensing under a facility, where allied dental professionals are hired.
Hygienists and therapistsWhere do medical professionals live, and what does it cost?
Most colleagues rent for the first year. The pattern is simple: pick a commute you can live with (hospital clusters sit around Dubai Healthcare City and Oud Metha, Jumeirah, Al Barsha and Dubai Hills, and Dubai Science Park), decide between a villa community and an apartment, and check the school run if you have children. Rents are paid in one to four cheques a year, with a security deposit, and the contract must be registered on Ejari before utilities connect.
I do not publish rent or price figures on this page because they move month to month. The area guides describe twelve communities for medical professionals; for the current figures I pull the DLD and DXB Interact data on the call and put it in your written summary with the date.
What about the Golden Visa?
A 10-year renewable UAE Golden Visa is available to owners of property valued by the DLD at AED 2 million or more. Since the February 2026 ICP circular, mortgaged and off-plan properties can qualify on the DLD-assessed value with no minimum paid-in amount; a bank NOC is required for mortgaged property. Rules change; eligibility is confirmed at the time of application. The property route is the one I know first-hand, and doctors and some other clinicians may also qualify under the ICP's specialised-talent category. The Golden Visa for doctors page has the 2026 rules, the steps and a one-page download.
And tax?
There is no UAE personal income tax and no capital gains tax on personal property. Your home-country rules may still apply to you (UK and US residents in particular). UAE corporate tax at 9% can apply to business and short-let income above AED 375,000. The Dubai Land Department charges a 4% transfer fee on purchases. I am a broker, not a tax adviser; the UK vs Dubai comparison sets out the figures with sources so that the conversation with your accountant is a short one.

Questions people ask
Can a UK dentist or doctor work in Dubai without re-qualifying?
In most cases yes. UK-qualified dentists and doctors apply through the DHA Sheryan portal: primary source verification (DataFlow), the DHA assessment or Prometric exam where required, then a facility sponsor. Timelines of 8 to 16 weeks are typical; the DHA is the authority. You do not repeat your degree; you prove it (primary source verification), you may sit an assessment, and a licensed facility then activates your licence under its name.
How long does DHA licensing take?
Timelines of 8 to 16 weeks are typical from Sheryan registration to an activated licence, and the DHA is the authority. The slowest step is usually DataFlow verification, which depends on how quickly your university and the GDC or GMC respond. Start before you fly. Source: DHA, reviewed 22 October 2026.
Do I need the Prometric exam?
It depends on your profession, qualification and register. Many UK specialists on a specialist register are exempt; many general dentists and some GPs sit it. The DHA publishes the current exemption criteria on Sheryan, and that list, not a forum, decides.
Can I apply for jobs before I am licensed?
Yes. Clinics interview and issue offers while you are in the process, because the final step (licence activation) is theirs to do. An eligibility letter from the DHA is what most employers want to see.
Is a DHA licence valid in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah?
No. A DHA licence covers Dubai only. Abu Dhabi is the Department of Health (DoH) and the northern emirates are MOHAP. Some facilities in free zones have their own regulator; Dubai Healthcare City licenses through the DHCC authority rather than the DHA.
What should I budget for licensing?
From my own move: budget roughly GBP 1,500 to 2,000 for verification, exam, attestation and translation fees, and more if certificates need re-issuing (Deepak's own estimate, October 2026). The DHA publishes its current fee schedule; fees change, so check it before you pay anything.
Can I bring my family and my pets?
Yes. Spouses and children come on your residence visa with attested marriage and birth certificates; a spouse needs their own work permit to work. Dogs and cats enter with a MOCCAE import permit, a microchip, vaccinations and a rabies titre test; many communities are pet-friendly, and I say which on the area guides.
Does Dubaiesque find me a job?
No. I am a property broker, not a recruiter. I will tell you how clinics hire, what a first contract should say, and introduce you to groups I know where it is appropriate, but the licence, the job and the negotiation are yours. The property, the visa and the move are where I earn my keep.
Figures are indicative, dated and sourced where shown; they are not advice and not a guarantee. Dubaiesque is a broker, not a tax, legal, immigration or financial adviser. Take independent advice before you commit.
