Veterinarians moving to Dubai
For RCVS-registered veterinary surgeons. The MOCCAE route through a sponsoring clinic, the documents, where vets work, and Dubai with a dog. Last reviewed 22 October 2026.
An RCVS-registered vet is licensed in Dubai through MOCCAE rather than the DHA, normally via the clinic that sponsors you: job offer first, attested documents, the clinic's PRO files the application, and the licence is issued against that clinic. Timelines of 8 to 16 weeks after attestation are typical in colleagues' experience; MOCCAE decides. Last reviewed 22 October 2026.
How does a UK vet get licensed in Dubai?
Secure a sponsoring clinic
MOCCAE applications are normally submitted through the employing clinic, so the job comes first. Clinics cluster in Al Quoz, Jumeirah, Al Barsha, Motor City and the villa communities.
Attest documents in the UK
BVetMed or equivalent, RCVS certificate of good standing under six months old, and family certificates: FCDO, UAE Embassy, Arabic translation and notarisation.
Clinic submits to MOCCAE
The clinic's PRO files the application on the MOCCAE system with your attested documents and experience letters.
Assessment, where required
MOCCAE's current requirements decide; ask the clinic.
Licence approval linked to the clinic
Your licence is issued against the sponsoring clinic.
Visa and Emirates ID
Work permit, medical fitness test, biometrics, visa stamp, Emirates ID.

What documents will I need?
- Passport with at least six months' validity
- BVetMed or equivalent degree and transcript, attested
- RCVS certificate of good standing, issued within the last six months
- Experience letters
- CV with photo
- Attested marriage and birth certificates if family are coming
- For your own animals: MOCCAE import permit, microchip, vaccination record, rabies titre, health certificate
Where do veterinarians work in Dubai?
Small-animal practices in Al Quoz, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Barsha, Motor City, Mirdif and the southern villa communities; equine practice around Meydan, Al Marmoom and the Nad Al Sheba stables; a growing number of specialist referral and emergency hospitals. Independent practice is a licensed clinic business rather than a sole-trader model.

What should I ask before I sign?
- Who files the MOCCAE application and pays for it, and any clawback.
- Basic salary, hours, on-call and out-of-hours terms.
- Professional indemnity cover in the contract.
- Health insurance, flights, leave and gratuity.
- Probation and notice periods.
- Whether CPD support is included.
Where would I live?
Rent first, buy later is the usual order. The area guides describe twelve communities for medical professionals with commute notes; for current rent and price figures I pull DLD and DXB Interact data on the call and date it in your written summary. If you are considering buying at AED 2 million or more, read the Golden Visa page first.

Questions people ask
Who licenses vets in Dubai?
Not the DHA. Veterinary surgeons are licensed federally by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), with the application normally submitted through the clinic that sponsors you; Dubai Municipality is involved for the clinic premises. Reviewed 22 October 2026.
Is there an exam for vets?
MOCCAE's current requirements decide; the process has centred on document verification and an assessment where required rather than a DHA-style Prometric paper. Ask the sponsoring clinic what MOCCAE currently requires.
How long does it take?
My colleagues' experience is similar to the DHA route, 8 to 16 weeks once documents are attested, but MOCCAE sets the timeline and it depends on the clinic's PRO.
Can I open my own veterinary clinic?
A veterinary clinic is a licensed, premises-based business with MOCCAE, Dubai Municipality and DET involved. Foreign ownership rules have loosened in recent years but the structure must be checked at the time; it is a healthcare property question I handle under NDA.
Is Dubai really pet-friendly?
Increasingly. Villa and townhouse communities such as Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills, Al Furjan, Damac Hills and Jumeirah Village Circle have dog parks or pet-tolerant rules; many apartment towers still prohibit pets, so check the building rules before signing a tenancy. Merlo, my Cavapoo, has tested a few of them.
How do I bring my dog or cat?
A MOCCAE import permit, microchip, current vaccinations, a rabies titre test from an approved lab, and a health certificate before travel. Use a pet relocation agent for the first move; I can introduce one.
