Dentists moving to Dubai

For GDC-registered dentists. The DHA route in order, the documents to attest before you fly, the contract questions that matter, and where the clinics are. Written by a UK dentist who made the move; last reviewed 22 October 2026.

A UK-qualified dentist can typically obtain a DHA licence in 8 to 16 weeks: documents attested in the UK, DataFlow verification, the Prometric exam unless exempt, an eligibility letter, then activation by the clinic that hires you. The DHA is the authority and fees change; last reviewed 22 October 2026. Below is the route I took, the paperwork, and the questions I wish I had asked.

What I wish I had known as a dentist moving to Dubai

  • Your title does not travel. The DHA licenses you as a general dentist or a specialist by register, not by what your UK practice called you. Expect to prove seniority at interview.
  • Read the commission clause twice. A fixed basic with an achievable target is safer than commission-only from day one, however generous the percentage sounds.
  • Attest before you fly. Every certificate needs FCDO legalisation, UAE Embassy attestation, then translation and notarisation here. Doing it from Dubai costs weeks.
  • Budget for licensing. From my own move, roughly GBP 1,500 to 2,000 for verification, exam, attestation and translation (Deepak's estimate, October 2026); the DHA publishes current fees.
  • Property agents are not regulated like UK estate agents. Insist on a RERA-registered broker, view in person, and pay no deposit before the Ejari contract is in hand.
  • The best jobs are often not advertised. Groups hire through referral. Turn up to CPD events; join the UK dentist groups.
  • The risk feels larger from the UK than it does from here. The regret I hear most often from colleagues is not having come sooner. That is an observation, not a promise.

  1. Attest everything in the UK first

BDS certificate, specialist certificates, GDC certificate of good standing (under six months old), marriage and birth certificates: FCDO legalisation, UAE Embassy attestation, then Arabic translation and notarisation in the UAE.

  2. Open a Sheryan account

Register on the DHA Sheryan portal as a healthcare professional, choose General Dentist or the specialty you are registered for, upload documents and pay the application fee.

  3. DataFlow primary source verification

DataFlow confirms your degree with your dental school and your registration with the GDC. Two to four weeks is typical when everyone replies; this is the step that most often slips.

  4. DHA Prometric exam

A computer-based multiple-choice paper at a Prometric centre; the DHA publishes the blueprint and pass mark. Many specialists on the GDC specialist list are exempt; check the current criteria.

  5. Eligibility letter

Valid for a year. This is what clinics want to see at interview.

  6. Facility activation

The clinic uploads your contract and malpractice cover and pays the licensing fee; the DHA activates your licence under the clinic's name.

  7. Visa and Emirates ID

Medical fitness test, biometrics, visa stamp, Emirates ID. Start work.

What documents will I need?

  • Passport with at least six months' validity
  • BDS (or DDS/DMD) certificate and transcript, attested
  • Specialist certificates, attested, if applying as a specialist
  • GDC certificate of good standing, issued within the last six months
  • Experience letters covering at least two years post-internship
  • Basic Life Support certificate
  • CV with a passport-style photo
  • DataFlow report and Prometric result, once obtained
  • Attested marriage and birth certificates if family are coming
  • Malpractice insurance (usually clinic-provided) at activation
All UK-issued certificates must be legalised by the FCDO, attested at the UAE Embassy in London, then translated into Arabic and notarised in the UAE. Do this before you fly.

Where do dentists work in Dubai?

Dental clinics cluster in Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim (the Jumeirah Road corridor), Dubai Healthcare City and Oud Metha, Business Bay and Downtown, Dubai Marina and JLT, Al Barsha and Dubai Hills, and increasingly in Dubai Science Park and the villa communities to the south. Employers range from hospital dental departments and multi-branch polyclinic groups to single-chair boutique practices. Many of the best roles are not advertised: groups hire through LinkedIn, referrals and WhatsApp networks, which is why joining the UK dentist community here early pays off. I am not a recruiter, but I know which groups are growing and I will say so on a call.

What should I ask before I sign?

  • The basic salary, the commission percentage, the monthly target that triggers it, and whether lab fees come off before or after commission.
  • Who pays for licensing, DataFlow, the exam and the visa, and whether any of it is clawed back if you leave within a year.
  • Malpractice cover: provided, and named in the contract.
  • Working days and hours; six-day weeks are common in private practice.
  • Probation length and notice period, in both directions.
  • Housing allowance or not; whether flights home are included; health insurance for family.
  • Whether the licence sits with a single branch or the group, which matters if you move clinics.

Where would I live?

Rent first, buy later is the usual order. The area guides describe twelve communities for medical professionals with commute notes; for current rent and price figures I pull DLD and DXB Interact data on the call and date it in your written summary. If you are considering buying at AED 2 million or more, read the Golden Visa page first.

Questions people ask

Can a UK dentist work in Dubai without re-qualifying?

Yes, in most cases. UK-qualified dentists and doctors apply through the DHA Sheryan portal: primary source verification (DataFlow), the DHA assessment or Prometric exam where required, then a facility sponsor. Timelines of 8 to 16 weeks are typical; the DHA is the authority. Your BDS is verified, not repeated. General dentists usually sit the DHA Prometric exam; specialists on the GDC specialist list are often exempt under the DHA's current criteria.

What experience does the DHA require of a general dentist?

The DHA's published criteria have required a recognised dental degree and a minimum of two years' post-internship clinical experience for general dentists, and three years' postgraduate experience in the specialty for specialists. Check the current criteria on Sheryan before you apply; they change. Reviewed 22 October 2026.

How long does the whole process take for a dentist?

Typically 8 to 16 weeks from Sheryan registration to an activated licence, with DataFlow the usual bottleneck. From my own move: start DataFlow and attestation before you resign, not after.

Will I be paid a salary or commission?

Both models exist. Some clinics offer a fixed basic plus a commission above a monthly target; some offer commission only after probation. Ask for the basic, the commission percentage, the target that triggers it, and whether lab fees are deducted before or after. I do not publish salary figures because they vary by clinic, specialty and year, and none I have seen carries a reliable source.

Can I work part-time or as a locum?

Part-time licensing exists under the DHA but needs facility approval and a specific licence category. Locum work across several clinics is more restricted than in the UK; your licence sits under one facility unless the DHA approves a second.

Does my UK title carry over?

Not automatically. A UK principal or clinical lead is licensed by the DHA as a general dentist or a specialist according to the register, not the job title. Seniority is shown in the interview and in what you negotiate.

Can I open my own clinic later?

Yes, after you are licensed and have UAE experience, subject to DHA facility licensing, a DET trade licence and approvable premises. That is the healthcare property side of what I do.

Is malpractice insurance required?

Yes. The facility normally provides it as a condition of licence activation; confirm it is in the contract. Personal top-up cover is available from the international insurers.
