Dental hygienists and therapists moving to Dubai

For GDC-registered dental hygienists and therapists. How the DHA categorises you, the route, the documents, scope of practice and who hires. Last reviewed 22 October 2026.

A UK dental hygienist can typically obtain a DHA licence in 8 to 16 weeks: the matching DHA category confirmed first, documents attested in the UK, DataFlow verification, the Prometric assessment, then activation by a licensed dental facility. Dental therapists are assessed against the DHA's title list. Last reviewed 22 October 2026.

How does a UK hygienist or therapist get a DHA licence?

  1. Check the DHA title that matches your qualification

Dental hygienist is a DHA category; therapy qualifications are assessed against the DHA's title list. Confirm on Sheryan before attesting documents.

  2. Attest documents in the UK

Diploma or degree, GDC certificate of good standing under six months old, and family certificates: FCDO, UAE Embassy, Arabic translation and notarisation.

  3. Register on Sheryan and upload

Pay the application fee; keep the receipt.

  4. DataFlow verification

DataFlow confirms your qualification and GDC registration; two to four weeks is typical.

  5. DHA assessment

The Prometric paper for your category unless exempt.

  6. Eligibility letter and activation

A licensed dental facility activates your licence under its name.

  7. Visa and Emirates ID

Medical fitness test, biometrics, visa stamp, Emirates ID.

What documents will I need?

  • Passport with at least six months' validity
  • Diploma or degree in dental hygiene or therapy and transcript, attested
  • GDC certificate of good standing, issued within the last six months
  • Experience letters covering at least two years
  • Basic Life Support certificate
  • CV with photo
  • DataFlow report and exam result, once obtained
  • Attested marriage and birth certificates if family are coming
All UK-issued certificates must be legalised by the FCDO, attested at the UAE Embassy in London, then translated into Arabic and notarised in the UAE. Do this before you fly.

Where do dental hygienists and therapists work in Dubai?

Dental groups along the Jumeirah corridor, in Dubai Healthcare City, Business Bay, Dubai Marina and Al Barsha, hospital dental departments, and boutique practices in the villa communities. Ask how hygiene is scheduled and whether the practice runs a hygienist-led recall, which tells you how the role is valued.

Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah

What should I ask before I sign?

  • Scope of practice under the DHA for your category, in writing.
  • Basic salary and any commission; hours and days.
  • Who pays licensing, DataFlow, the exam and the visa.
  • Malpractice cover in the contract.
  • Health insurance, flights, leave and gratuity.
  • Probation and notice periods.

Where would I live?

Rent first, buy later is the usual order. The area guides describe twelve communities for medical professionals with commute notes; for current rent and price figures I pull DLD and DXB Interact data on the call and date it in your written summary. If you are considering buying at AED 2 million or more, read the Golden Visa page first.

Questions people ask

Does the DHA license dental hygienists and dental therapists?

The DHA licenses dental hygienists as a distinct allied dental category. Dental therapy as practised in the UK does not map one-to-one onto the DHA's titles; a UK therapist typically applies in the category that matches their qualification and the DHA decides the scope. Check the current title list on Sheryan before you apply.

What experience is required?

The DHA's published criteria have required a recognised diploma or degree in dental hygiene and two years' experience; check the current criteria. Reviewed 22 October 2026.

Is there an exam?

Usually yes, the DHA Prometric assessment for the category, unless the DHA's current criteria exempt you.

How long does it take?

Typically 8 to 16 weeks from Sheryan registration to activation, with DataFlow the usual bottleneck.

Who hires hygienists in Dubai?

Multi-branch dental groups, hospital dental departments and boutique practices. Hygiene-led roles are growing as preventive and periodontal care expand; many practices still rely on dentists for scaling, so ask how hygiene is scheduled.

Can I work independently?

No. Your licence sits under a DHA-licensed dental facility and your scope is set by the DHA, which is narrower than the GDC's direct-access model.
